How did we do?

Georgia Tech reduced its energy use significantly during Earth Hour, as demonstrated in the actual electricity readings for the Georgia Tech campus.

Atlanta as a whole, also made us proud. As one of only 4 US cities, and a couple of dozen around the world, Atlanta demonstrated its leadership in sustainability by stepping up to Earth Hour and asking for continuing efforts to reduce our energy consumption and to use what energy we need, wisely.

Everyone's participation in Earth Hour was appreciated. Please help us continue to reduce and use wisely. Let's make it a lifelong habit.

Georgia Tech is supporting and participating Earth Hour

Saturday, March 29, 8-9 pm on the Georgia Tech Campus, across Atlanta, and globally lights will go out for the hour in celebration of and recognition of Earth Hour.

The World Wildlife Fund recently announced that the city of Atlanta is an official supporting city of Earth Hour 2008.

Earth Hour is a worldwide event in which more than 20 cities are going to turn off the non-essential lights for one hour in an attempt to make a powerful statement about the change in climate. Now that Atlanta has signed on as a participating city, on Saturday, March 29 from 8 to 9 p.m., the entire city will go dark.

As many individuals, businesses and local government officials participate, many landmark buildings in Downtown, at Georgia Tech, in Midtown, Atlantic Station and Buckhead will be completely dark. Atlanta is in good company supporting this cause as cities like San Francisco, Chicago, Phoenix, Bangkok, Copenhagen, Sydney, Toronto and others will also be turning off the lights to demonstrate their concern and commitment to finding a solution to the climate change. Mayor Shirley Franklin proudly accepted WWF’s invitation to represent the Easter Time Zone as a way to complement to recently launched “Sustainable Atlanta” environmental initiative. We encourage the Atlanta community to the lead of these Atlanta officials and remember to turn off your lights on March 29 from 8 to 9 p.m. to show your support for the environment.

Georgia Tech employees are encouraged to turn off their office lights, coffee pots, computers, printers, and powerstrips with chargers or LED displaying devices before they leave work on Friday.

Laboratories that required light and ongoing use of electricity are left to the discretion of their lab manager. However, if you are working late in your lab on Saturday, if possible, use the 8-9 pm hour to leave lab for a break or for a late dinner and turn the lights out in support of this powerful event.

People who live on and near campus are encouraged to turn off their lights between 8-9 pm. Take the opportunity to invite your family and friends to participate in Earth Hour too. Maybe throw a flash light party or show a movie in your otherwise darkened party room!

Security lights and power will be in use during Earth Hour. Consuming less electricity and turning your interior lights off will show your support, and Georgia Tech's support for this exciting city wide and world wide event.
